From Dresden to Pfaffenstein / Barbarine

Last update: Mai 2026

Rising high above the Elbe Valley, the Pfaffenstein is one of the most impressive table mountains in Saxon Switzerland. Unlike many other popular spots in the region, it still feels quiet and untouched in places.

The highlight of the hike is the famous Barbarine – a striking sandstone rock tower that has become a symbol of the area. Reaching it involves a short but rewarding climb, including stairs and ladders, which makes the experience a bit more adventurous without being too difficult.

What makes this trip especially attractive is how easy it is to get there. Starting from Dresden Hauptbahnhof, you can reach the trailhead by public transport in under an hour, followed by a straightforward walk to the top.

If you are looking for a hike with great views, a bit of adventure, and easy access without a car, Pfaffenstein and the Barbarine are a perfect choice.

Getting there: Dresden → Königstein

From Dresden Hauptbahnhof, take the S-Bahn line S1 towards Saxon Switzerland from platform 13.

Tickets are available in the main hall or online. When booking online , make sure to select the correct destination: Königstein (Sächsische Schweiz). If you choose the wrong Königstein, you will notice it by a much higher ticket price. (Price: €9.50)

From Königstein station to Pfaffendorf

At Bahnhof Königstein (Sächsische Schweiz), leave the platform and walk towards the town.

At the first roundabout, turn left into Bielatalstraße and follow it until you reach a noticeable historic post column. From there, the ascent to Pfaffendorf begins.

Route to Pfaffendorf: two options

Once you reach Pfaffendorf, you have two options:

1. Direct route (shorter)
Take a cross path that leads directly towards Pfaffenstein.

2. Through the village
Walk through the village to the central square. There are several vending machines with food, drinks, and ice cream. Most offer local products.

Alternative route: via “Schöne Aussicht”

There is an alternative route via “Schöne Aussicht” (“Beautiful View”):

From the platform, take the stairs up and cross the road at the top (be careful, there is a lot of traffic).

This route goes through a shaded forest (especially pleasant in the afternoon) and includes a nice viewpoint called “Schöne Aussicht”.

After that, you will also reach Pfaffendorf and can continue towards Pfaffenstein.

Climb to Pfaffenstein and Barbarine

From Pfaffendorf, follow the path towards Pfaffenstein.

I took the easier route up ("bequemer Aufstieg"). After about 30 minutes, you will reach the Barbarine.
