Day Trip from Dresden to the Schrammsteine (Saxon Switzerland)

Last update: May 2026

The Schrammsteine are some of the most spectacular rock formations in Saxon Switzerland. Thanks to the S-Bahn from Dresden, this hiking destination is easy to reach. It is a perfect mix of a relaxed journey and a rewarding mountain hike.

Tickets and Train to Krippen

How to get there

You can buy tickets for the S1 S-Bahn at Dresden Hauptbahnhof (main station) at the travel center, ticket machines in the concourse, or on the platforms. The easiest way is to buy them online via the Deutsche Bahn website or theVVO app. This saves you time waiting in line.

The S1 runs every 30 minutes from Dresden to Saxon Switzerland. The trip from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Krippen takes about 55 minutes. Some trains end in Bad Schandau, but you can easily connect to Krippen from there. Always check the current timetable in the DB Navigator app before you leave.

  • Tip: Sit on the left side of the train (in the direction of travel) for the best views of the rock landscape.

Ticket prices

A single ticket from Dresden to Krippen costs about €9.50 for adults. If you travel often, the Germany Ticket (€63 per month) covers this route. For a day trip, a day pass for the region (around €20.50) is worth it if you return the same day. Children who have not yet started school ride for free.

  • Important: There is no ticket machine at Krippen station. If you do not buy your ticket online, purchase your return ticket in Dresden before you leave.

Mobile signal

Mobile phone reception can be weak in some parts of the region. However, in the towns along the route, signal worked fine during my visit.

Ferry across the Elbe

From Krippen station, it is about a 12-minute walk to the Elbe ferry. The crossing to Postelwitz takes only a few minutes and costs €2 per person (May 2026). The short ferry ride is a nice start to the hike, with views of the river and the surrounding rocks.

The hike up

After the ferry, follow the hiking trails toward the Schrammsteine. The path first leads through the Saxon Switzerland National Park before the real climb into the rocks begins.

The higher you go, the harder the trail gets. On the Jägersteig path, you will climb many stone steps and several metal ladders through the rock formations. Experienced hikers will find the route manageable, but beginners need good fitness, sure-footedness, and no fear of heights.

  • Safety warning: In wet, cold, or icy weather, be extra careful. Steps, ladders, and rocks become slippery. Hiking boots with good grip are essential.

Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with stunning views of the Schrammsteine and the wide landscape of Saxon Switzerland.

National Park Rules

The Saxon Switzerland National Park has clear rules that all visitors must follow:

  • No open fires anywhere in the park.
  • Do not damage nature — protect plants, animals, and rocks.
  • Stay on marked trails — do not leave the path.

Not all paths are open to hikers. Some trails are only for climbers and are not official hiking routes. These areas are clearly marked and must not be used as walking paths. Always follow the signs to protect the sensitive rock and forest landscape.

The Return Trip

Plan enough time for your return, especially because you must take the ferry back across the Elbe. Check the ferry and S-Bahn departure times on site or via the Deutsche Bahn app. On weekends and public holidays, the schedule may be different.

  • Tip: Plan at least 5 to 6 hours for the whole trip, including the hike, breaks, and travel. This keeps the day relaxed and gives you time for photos and enjoying the views.

Final Thoughts

A day trip from Dresden to the Schrammsteine is a great way to experience the unique rock world of Saxon Switzerland. The S-Bahn journey is simple, the ferry ride is charming, and the climb rewards you with breathtaking views. With good shoes, enough water, and a quick check of the timetables, this day will be an unforgettable adventure.

The Schrammsteine are just one of many car-free adventures in the area. For the full overview, see our guide to day trips in Saxon Switzerland by public transport. If the ladders sound too demanding, the Lichtenhain Waterfall walk and the Bastei loop are gentler alternatives, while the Lilienstein hike is another rewarding train-and-ferry trip nearby.

FAQ - Quick Guide

Plan 5 to 6 hours total. The train from Dresden takes about 55 minutes each way, the ferry crossing is a few minutes, and the hike itself takes 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace and breaks.

Not really. The Jägersteig path includes steep stone steps and metal ladders. You need good fitness, sturdy hiking boots, and no fear of heights. If you are unsure, try an easier trail in the area first.

A single S-Bahn ticket is about €9.50 (May 2026). The ferry costs €2 per person each way. A regional day pass (around €20.50) is a good deal for the return trip.

You can, but the ladders and stone steps can be icy and very dangerous. Only go in winter if you have proper gear, experience, and the weather is stable. Spring through autumn is the best time for most visitors.
