Best Hiking and Day Trip Destinations in Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) – Easily Reachable by Public Transport
The Saxon Switzerland National Park (Nationalpark Sächsische Schweiz) is one of Germany’s most spectacular landscapes and surprisingly easy to explore entirely car-free. Thanks to excellent S-Bahn, regional trains, buses, ferries and the famous Kirnitzschtal tram, you can reach all the iconic spots with just a day ticket or Deutschland-Ticket.
Here are the top hiking destinations and day trips you can do 100 % by public transport:
1. Bastei Bridge & Rathen (the absolute classic)
How to get there: S1 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Kurort Rathen (30–40 min), then a short 20-minute walk uphill or the free shuttle bus in high season.
Highlights: Panoramic views from the iconic Bastei Bridge, Neurathen rock castle, Amselsee lake and the romantic village of Rathen.
Best hike: Bastei – Schwedenlöcher – Amselfall loop (ca. 3–4 hours, moderate).

2. Schrammsteine (wild and adventurous)
How to get there: S1 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Krippen (about 55 min), then a 12-minute walk to the Elbe ferry and a short crossing to Postelwitz (€2). From the riverbank the trail climbs straight up into the rocks.
Highlights: Steep stone steps and metal ladders on the Jägersteig, narrow passages between the sandstone towers and a breathtaking panorama over the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
Good to know: This is a demanding climb — you need solid fitness, sure-footedness and no fear of heights. In wet or icy conditions the steps and ladders get slippery.
