Day Trip from Dresden to the Lichtenhain Waterfall (Saxon Switzerland)

Getting from Dresden to Bad Schandau

Traveling from Dresden to the Lichtenhain Waterfall is straightforward and works well using public transport. Start by taking the S-Bahn line S1 to Bad Schandau. The journey takes about 45 minutes.

From the Train Station to the Ferry

From Bad Schandau station, walk towards the Elbe River to the ferry stop “Bad Schandau Bahnhof”. The ferry runs every 30 minutes between approximately 06:30 and 21:30.

Ferry details:
  • Single trip: €2
  • Return ticket: €3
  • Accessible via ramp
  • Travel time: about 10 minutes (the ferry goes slightly upstream towards the town)
Alternative:

You can also walk across the bridge instead of taking the ferry. This takes about 30 minutes.

Walking through Bad Schandau to the Tram

After crossing the river, walk towards the town center and continue to the market square. Cross the square towards the church, then follow Bergmannstraße to the spa park (Kurpark).

Inside the park, follow the Kirnitzsch river. After about 500 meters, you will find the tram stop on the left.

Taking the Kirnitzschtal Tram

The historic tram takes you directly to the Lichtenhain Waterfall. The ride takes about 25 minutes and passes through a narrow valley with impressive sandstone rock formations.

The tram has been operating since 1898 and still retains its historic character. The ride can be slightly bumpy, especially in curves, but that is part of the experience.

Important notes:
  • Tickets are sold by the conductor
  • Usually cash only → bring coins
  • Deutschland-Ticket and regional guest cards are accepted
  • Boarding starts after the tram has been repositioned (wait for announcement)

Alternative: Bus Line 241

As an alternative to the tram, bus line 241 also runs through the Kirnitzsch Valley. It serves the same route and stops along the valley up to the Lichtenhain Waterfall. This is useful if the tram is crowded or there are longer waiting times.

Arrival at the Lichtenhain Waterfall

The final stop is located directly at the Lichtenhain Waterfall. From here, several hiking trails start, including the popular route to the rock formation known as “Kuhstall”.

Advantage over Traveling by Car

During the main holiday season (May to September) and on weekends, the Kirnitzsch Valley can become very crowded, especially for drivers. Parking spaces are limited and access roads are often congested.

Using public transport is a clear advantage, as there is no need to search for parking and the trip is much more relaxed.

Planning Your Return

It is recommended to check the tram timetable in advance, especially in the evening when services may be less frequent.
