Buying the Ticket

I bought my ticket at Maribor railway station. First, I asked at the ticket counters in the main hall. I was told that they only sell domestic tickets there. International tickets are sold in a separate office to the left of the ticket counters. The staff there were very friendly and spoke good English. I paid €46 for the ticket and €3.50 for the seat reservation. I was able to pay by card.

I chose a connection with only one change and a 60-minute stop in Vienna. This makes the journey more reliable and gives you enough time in case of delays. Train from Maribor to Vienna

I travelled from Maribor to Vienna on EC 78. The train came from Zagreb. The carriages were quite old, probably from the 1990s, and were not particularly clean. The air conditioning was rather weak, but it was sufficient for August. There was no Wi-Fi, but power sockets were available.

Just after the border, the train stopped at Spielfeld. Police officers got on the train and checked the passports of all passengers. The checks took place inside the train, so passengers did not have to leave the train. Passports were checked at the seats. The stop lasted about 15 minutes.

On the way, the train passes through beautiful mountain landscapes. Mobile phone reception was poor around the Semmering area.

Arriving in Vienna

By the time we arrived in Vienna, the train was only 3 minutes late. Changing trains was easy. The platforms are close together, so I did not have to walk far. All platforms have escalators and lifts. Vienna Central Station is very modern and clean. Everything travellers need is available there.

However, my train to Brno was delayed and the platform was changed. So always keep an eye on the departure boards.

Train to Brno

The journey to Brno took 1 hour and 45 minutes and went smoothly. There were no border checks between Austria and the Czech Republic. However, it is always a good idea to keep your passport easily accessible.
