Dresden to Ljubljana by Train: The Villach Transfer Explained

Dresden – Villach (RJ 251)

Police officers board the train already in Dresden. They are responsible for border checks and carry out spot passport checks, so keep your ID documents within reach.

A seat reservation is recommended, whether you travel in 1st or 2nd class. The Berlin–Prague–Vienna section is busy throughout. Only after Vienna did the train noticeably empty out.

The train has a dining car, which was open for the whole journey, and toilets. Both were in perfect condition. There are power sockets at the seats, and the luggage racks are large enough. Wifi is available, and the speed is fine for normal browsing.

Announcements were made in German and Czech — and always in English as well.

The ride through the Czech Republic is slow, with many tunnels and curves. The train was kept tidy throughout the journey, and the toilets stayed clean the whole way.

Border CZ – AT

In Břeclav the staff changed and the ÖBB crew took over. After that, tickets were checked again. I did not see any border checks on board.

After Vienna, the train takes the Semmering railway: many curves and tunnels, so the going is slow. A new tunnel is being built and is due to be finished by 2029. Between Graz and Klagenfurt, the train then runs at 220 km/h through the new tunnel.

Arriving in Villach

My train was 30 minutes late, so I missed my connection towards Ljubljana. Since there are departures every two hours until the evening, I simply took the next one. My ticket was accepted on the later train without any problem. Even so, when planning your trip, check when the last connection or the last transfer of the day leaves.

Food options at the station are basic but sufficient: there are snack bars and a vending machine shop on the station forecourt. The toilets cost 50 cents — put a coin in the door and it opens.

Villach is a good starting point for travelling on to the Adriatic coast, both towards Italy and Slovenia and towards Croatia and Zagreb.

Villach – Ljubljana

Villach station is step-free. The train to Ljubljana leaves from platform 8, which you reach through the tunnel. The platform is a little outside the station building, so allow about 5 minutes on foot. Platform 8 can be reached by lift as well as by stairs.

The train to Ljubljana is modern, clean and has internet. I did not see any border checks. After the border, the staff changes and the tickets are checked again. Roaming worked seamlessly along the whole route.

Ljubljana station is currently (August 2026) a large construction site. New lifts were already in place at some platforms. It is not chaotic, but it is confusing — expect delays and some trouble finding your way.

Conclusion

The ten hours from Dresden to Villach are tiring. Even so, I would always continue on to Ljubljana — because then you are actually there.
