From Gdańsk to Westerplatte by Bus – How to Get There

Westerplatte is where the first shots of the Second World War were fired on 1 September 1939. The site sits on a peninsula northeast of the city, somewhat cut off from the centre, but public transport gets you there cheaply and without fuss. Bus line 106 runs daily from Gdańsk Główny (the main train station) to Westerplatte in about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Which bus to take

Line 106 is the reliable choice – it runs every day and ends at the "Muzeum Westerplatte" stop right by the site. Line 606 also serves Westerplatte, but only from Thursday to Sunday, so don't count on it earlier in the week. Both depart from Gdańsk Główny.

Where to buy tickets

Buy your ticket in advance at the ticket machines found at most bus and tram stops across the city. A single ticket costs 4.80 PLN. Validate it immediately after boarding – the machine reminds you of this when you buy it. Tickets are also sold via mobile apps such as Jakdojade.

Can you buy tickets on the bus?

Many buses have a ticket machine on board, usually card payment only. I did not buy mine this way, and not every vehicle has one, so buying at the stop beforehand is the safer option.

What to expect on the route

The bus leaves the city, crosses a large bridge over the harbour and passes through an industrial port area before reaching Westerplatte. It is a straightforward ride and an easy way to visit this historic site.
