Athens - Delphi Bus Tour

Where to buy tickets

I could not find a reliable way to buy tickets online for the Athens to Delphi route. KTEL Greece is organised by regional bus companies and the information online can be confusing.

I bought my ticket directly at the K-Tel terminal in Athens, which worked without any problems. Communication in English was easy and the staff were helpful.

If you travel during public holidays or high season, buying the ticket a bit earlier at the station may be a good idea.

Trip to Delphi

The journey from Athens to Delphi takes around 3 hours. After leaving Athens, the route passes through smaller towns and rural landscapes in Central Greece.

Most buses stop briefly on the way for a short break. In Amfissa, passengers usually change to a smaller local bus for the final part of the trip to Delphi. The transfer was straightforward and staff helped passengers find the correct bus.

Luggage was stored underneath the bus and there was enough space for backpacks and suitcases. The buses were air-conditioned and the ride was comfortable even during warmer weather.

Arrival in Delphi

The bus stops near the lower end of the village along the main road. From here, Delphi feels compact and easy to navigate. Most hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and small shops are located within walking distance along a single main street that runs uphill through the village.

The archaeological site and the museum are not at the bus stop level, but higher up on the slope above the village. The walk from the village to the entrance typically takes around 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your exact starting point.

The route is straightforward and follows the main road uphill. There are signposts for the archaeological site along the way, so navigation is not difficult. However, the incline is noticeable in parts, especially in warm weather, so comfortable shoes and water are recommended.

There is no need for a taxi unless you have mobility issues or heavy luggage. The distance is short, but the uphill section can feel more demanding than it looks on a map.

Visiting the Oracle of Delphi

The archaeological site of Delphi can easily be reached on foot from the village. Depending on where your hotel is located, the walk to the entrance takes around 10 to 20 minutes.

The main highlight is the Temple of Apollo, home of the famous Oracle of Delphi in ancient times. According to Greek mythology and historical sources, pilgrims from across the ancient world travelled here to seek advice and prophecies from the priestess known as the Pythia.

The ruins are spread across the mountainside with impressive views over the valley below. Besides the Temple of Apollo, the site also includes an ancient theatre, treasury buildings and walking paths through the sanctuary.

Opening hours, tickets and official visitor information can be found on the official Delphi archaeological site website: delphi.culture.gr.
