Oskarshamn to Visby Ferry by Motorcycle: Route Guide & First-Timer Tips

I travelled with Destination Gotland on the Oskarshamn → Visby route on June 19, 2025, and returned on June 27, 2025. Both trips were booked through the Destination Gotland website (www.destinationgotland.se). I purchased Flexi tickets for both crossings, which allowed me to change the return departure date without additional cost. I used this feature during the trip and the process was simple to handle directly through their website.

The total cost for the round trip was 2360 SEK (June 2025: €215) including my motorcycle. The crossing time was approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes in both directions.

Arrival & Check-In at Oskarshamn

When arriving at the ferry terminal in Oskarshamn by motorcycle, vehicles are guided into different waiting lanes marked directly on the asphalt. After scanning the ticket QR code at a booth similar to a toll station, I received a paper slip showing which lane to queue in before boarding. Motorcycles and bicycles shared the same waiting lane, which gave people time to talk while waiting for boarding to begin.

One thing first-time travelers should know is that vehicle passengers do not pass through the main terminal building during boarding, meaning there is no easy bathroom access once the vehicle queue starts moving. The vessel itself had plenty of available bathrooms once onboard.

Loading & Securing Your Motorcycle

Motorcycles were loaded onto the vehicle deck separately from cars. The parking spaces were clearly marked with yellow paint, and tie-down straps were already hanging next to the motorcycle parking area. Passengers secure their own motorcycles using these straps because the ferry can roll during rough weather. I noticed several riders helping each other secure their bikes correctly while crew members supervised and gave instructions when needed.

After boarding, I found my assigned seat and heard the captain make a welcome announcement over the PA system. One detail I remember clearly was the captain asking car passengers to disable their car alarms so animals remaining inside vehicles would not become stressed during the crossing.

Onboard: Atmosphere & Amenities

During the trip I visited the rooftop bar and restaurant areas. On the return trip from Visby, which took place during Almedalsveckan — a large annual political and social event held in Visby — the ferry was noticeably busier than usual. Many passengers were resting or sleeping on benches, in restaurant seating areas, and outside on the rooftop deck, and staff appeared comfortable allowing this as long as walkways remained clear.

Practical Tips for First-Time Travelers

One practical tip for first-time travelers is to take a photo of your vehicle deck and parking section before leaving your motorcycle or car. The vehicle deck is large and can feel disorienting when returning before arrival announcements.
