Neuschwanstein Castle – Easy Step-by-Step Public Transport Guide

How to Get from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle (Quick Answer)

Munich → Neuschwanstein Castle takes about 3.5 hours and costs around €35 one way.
The easiest route is train to Füssen + bus (line 71/73) + 30-minute walk to the castle.

This is the most common and reliable public transport option for a day trip.

Overview

Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited destinations in Germany. Despite the crowds, the trip is absolutely worth it – especially because the surrounding Alpine landscape becomes more impressive the closer you get to Füssen.

Buying a Train Ticket in Munich

At Munich main station (status: April 2026), construction work is ongoing. Ticket machines can be found in the main hall and at the platforms.

A train ticket costs approximately €32.

Alternatively, tickets can be purchased online via Deutsche Bahn: https://int.bahn.de/en

Train Journey to Füssen

There are several connections from Munich Central Station to Füssen. One possible route is:

  • S-Bahn S3 to Pasing
  • Change in Pasing to a regional train towards Füssen

The S-Bahn offers WiFi, but the regional train does not. On a Tuesday morning, the train was already quite full.

The transfer in Pasing is simple and easy to manage.

The journey takes quite a long time, as the train sometimes travels slowly. The closer you get to Füssen, the better the views of the Alps become. The route has many curves, creating a scenic panorama. The side you sit on does not matter.

Bus to Neuschwanstein

The bus (line 71 or 73) departs directly in front of the station.

  • Travel time: ~10–15 minutes
  • Price: approx. €3
  • Tickets are available on the bus
  • Cash payment only at the moment

Buying Castle Entrance Tickets

From the bus stop, it is about a 250-meter walk to the ticket center.

Tickets can also be purchased in advance online here: https://shop.ticket-center-hohenschwangau.de/Shop/Index/en/39901

Walk to the Castle

From the ticket center to the castle entrance, the walk takes about 25 - 35 minutes.

The path is wide, well maintained, and easy to walk. Simply follow the signs.

Return Journey

Make sure to keep an eye on bus departure times. The last buses back to Füssen station depart around 19:30.

Important Note

This destination is very popular. Expect large crowds and try to start your trip early.

I visited in April 2026 (before peak season). By midday, it was already significantly more crowded.

It is recommended to bring enough cash, as some payments may require cash on site.
