Bus or train?

There is a direct train from Liepāja to Riga, but only one a day, and it leaves at 04:57. It reaches Riga at 08:10 and costs €9.10, making it the cheapest and slightly fastest option if you can manage the early start.

For everyone else, the bus is the practical choice. Departures run throughout the day, and you don’t have to book in advance.

Buying the bus ticket

Bus tickets are sold at the counters inside the station building in Liepāja, the same counters as for train tickets. The staff member I dealt with spoke good English and handed me a printed list of departures to choose from. I took the 11:45 Lux Express and paid €14.

You can also book online with Lux Express or through bezrindas.lv. The latter adds a small fee.

The journey

The bus takes country roads most of the way, since Latvia has very few motorways. This is why the trip takes 3h 30m for under 220 km. It’s a relaxed ride through flat farmland and forest.

Stops along the way

  • Two roadside stops, where passengers got on or off directly at the road.
  • Saldus (approx. 13:10): The bus pulls into the town’s bus station for a 7-minute break. Inside there is a small kiosk and a restaurant, but there isn’t time to eat. The toilets are in a separate, signposted building and cost €0.50, coins only, so keep some change handy.
  • Brocēni: another short stop.

Arriving in Riga

The bus runs right into the city centre and ends at Riga International Bus Station (Rīgas Starptautiskā autoosta), directly next to Riga Central Station. The Old Town is a short walk away, and trains, trams and buses are all on your doorstep.
