How to Visit Schiffshebewerk Niederfinow – A Complete Travel Guide

The Schiffshebewerk Niederfinow is a stunning feat of German engineering and a must-see attraction for history and technology enthusiasts. The site features two ship lifts: the original historic lift and a modern facility. The original ship lift, inaugurated in 1934, offers a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century engineering. Its detailed machinery and preserved elements make it particularly captivating for visitors.
Tickets are easy to buy on-site, and current opening hours are listed on the official museum website: schiffshebewerk-niederfinow.com. From March 2026, guided tours and visits will resume.

Getting There from Berlin

Coming straight from the airport? Start with BER to Berlin Hauptbahnhof — from there it is one train to Eberswalde and one bus to the lift.

Step 1: Train to Eberswalde

Take a train (e.g. RE3, RB63) from Berlin heading toward Eberswalde. Keep in mind that during summer or holiday periods, trains to the north can get crowded. Plan ahead to secure a comfortable seat. Further information: https://int.bahn.de/en

Step 2: Bus from Eberswalde to Niederfinow

From Eberswalde station, transfer to Bus Line 916.

  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Cost: €3.20 per person
  • Frequency: Hourly service (as of February 2026)
  • Timetable: BBG Eberswalde – Line 916
Note: Bus schedules are only available in German, so it’s helpful to check in advance if you don’t speak the language.

At the Museum

The bus stop at Niederfinow is just a few steps from the visitor center. Once you arrive, you can explore the historic lift, modern facility, and enjoy detailed exhibits explaining the engineering marvel of this iconic site.
