From Kaunas to Klaipėda
There are two ways to travel from Kaunas to Klaipėda: by bus or by train. I looked at both and took the bus.
Kaunas Bus Station
Kaunas has a new, modern bus station. There is an information desk, four ticket counters and three ticket machines.
Buying a ticket: I used a ticket machine. You can switch the language to English, and it is very easy to use. Enter your start, destination and date, and you’re done. I chose a direct bus: 2 hours 45 minutes for 23 euros.
You can also book online at autobusubilietai.lt, the main booking website for long-distance buses in Lithuania. It is available in English.
Facilities: The station has Wi-Fi, a supermarket and small shops. Screens show when and where each bus leaves. Outside, each platform has its own sign showing which bus departs there.
Toilets: The toilets cost 0.50 euros and you have to pay with coins. Card payment was out of order. I paid with a 1-euro coin and did not get any change, so bring the exact amount. The toilets were clean.
The Alternative: Kaunas Train Station
Kaunas has an impressive train station. The building is in very good condition. In front of the station there is a pedestrian tunnel, which is an easy way to reach the building.
There is a ticket counter and two ticket machines, which are easy to use in English. Announcements at the station are also in English.
Connection: Departure at 10:42 with one change in Šiauliai (11 minutes to change trains). The trip takes 4 hours 3 minutes and costs 27.44 euros.
You can also book train tickets online at ltglink.lt or in the LTG Link app. Online tickets are usually a little cheaper than at the station.
The bus is much faster, so I chose the bus.
The Bus Journey
My bus left from platform 19. It was very clean and had Wi-Fi.
The paper ticket is only in Lithuanian. The easiest way to understand it is with a translation app.
The bus makes one more stop in the suburbs of Kaunas. About halfway, it stops for a few minutes at a rest area.
The trip went smoothly, and after 2 hours 45 minutes we arrived in Klaipėda on time.
Travelling on through the Baltics? The Baltics by public transport guide covers the whole route from Warsaw to Tallinn, with every leg I travelled myself.
